May meeting 2010

Everyone,
We had a great meeting. Short of a few first time techno issues the meeting was successful, in that, everyone in attendance now has some experience installing the basic Drupal Web CMS package.
Each person in attendance had their own site locally here at Accelerated's home office. The small glitches have been fixed so that at the next meeting we will be able to individually complete the task of installing this popular open source CMS product.
We covered FTP programs, downloading the Drupal package, uploading it to the web folder and preparing the SQL database for installation. We then showed the browser based installation which resulted in a complete base line site.
Following the time the code issue was discovered we dropped individual installations and move to a demonstration on another server / sub-domain off site. Most felt as thought this was adequate to dispel most of their concerns about doing it themselves alone or at the next meeting in June.
For those who are interested in the issue we came across here are some details. The server where the sites were placed had just been updated with Ubuntu 10.04 which includes PHP 5.3. Ben was able to locate a deprecated PHP command that is in the basic Drupal package. If you would like, here is the link to the Drupal site where the solution was found.
We will continue to be diligent when installing additional modules and perhaps finding other deprecated function calls. From my cursory look at the issue, the Drupal community is currently working to make the base line installation PHP 5.3 compatible.
It is not too late to join the group. It is my belief that earlier joiners of this specialty group will be able to help the latter starts to catch up for at least two additional meetings. I will delay a judgment on this idea before the meeting in September. As was stated in the earlier newsletter we will be limiting the number of attendees to 10, so reserve yourself a spot and learn the basics concerning one of the "hottest" new Web products.
If you do attend. To have an active meeting while you are here it would be best to bring a notebook. You may work locally (very fast and lets more happen in less time) or if you want you can work on your actual site while here. You must bring the information for your host site and MySQL or PostGreSQL services if you wish to work on your live site. If you work locally and later want to move it to your live site Drupal can be moved with only some effort, the largest would be moving the SQL data from PostGreSQL to MySQL.
As the process moves forward we will be touching on the subjects of Clarion applications being applied to the Drupal sites. We also will be considering apps for IPhone and Android that would also interface the sites.
The ACUG site and the new ADDG site are currently one in the same. Coming from either, you will be able to login using the same login password and user name. If you depend on your browser to remember your user names and passwords, due to browser specifics, if you have only logged into the site using the ACUG URL then you will have to re-enter the user name and password if you approach the site from the ADDG URL.
Here are the two URLS.
